(Project  Introduction)

In Manhattan Manuscripts, Bernard Tschumi insisted that there is no architecture without movement, without events, without space, searching a boarder definition of architecture. Architecture is the sum of space and events. Begin with this, architecture resource is far more than building's space and form. The organizational logic of a block, internal traffic routes and the activities that take place inside the buildings......all these elements hidden in buildings can be used as architecture resources.

Dali is a diminishing ancient town due to the rapid tourism development as the same as many other ancient towns and villages in China. Most tourists are getting unfamiliar with the so-called "traditional buildings". People living in the city h**e been already moved to the northern parts to provide space for the flooding tourists. However, there are hardly any public spaces in the local streets. Therefore, if no further efficient urban planning with massive emigration was conducted, Dali will be an empty town with gorgeous outlookings. So this project aims at reconstructing a community library in the north of the city for local people. Through this project, the public activities in northern zone will be activated and more locals will stay in Dali.

At the entrance of several old alleys lies the library, which takes an overall regeneration of 8 houses. The project makes full use of a series of resources--including the town fabric, alley-like space, walls and roofs forms of old houses--to concrete those everyday activities in the alleys and yards into architecture forms, as "memory pieces". These "memory pieces" are supposed to intrigue former residents and trigger new possible activities. The aim of this project is to @Create vague boundaries for outdoor reading at the circumstances of Dali's weather condition. Through transforming part of the indoor space into half-outdoor space, a bunch of small yards are @Created. New paths are attached to old ones, connecting indoor space and outdoor space with "memory pieces" among them.

In this reframing library with an extraordinary character that is capable of offering its residents an ordinarily poetic life. For instance residents could read, walk in the garden and talk with their neighbors pleasantly, thus everything is not strange. We hope that new activities could happen naturally. Finally, local residents could rebuild the sense of belonging of their spirit home.
